Stanwood clinches district playoff berth

LAKE STEVENS – In an exciting Western Conference North Division game, Stanwood came from behind to defeat Lake Stevens 66-56 Friday, giving the Spartans a district playoff berth.

Lake Stevens had an eight-point lead entering the fourth quarter. However, Stanwood used a 1-2-2 zone defense and half-court trap to hold Lake Stevens’ scoreless the last four minutes of the game.

Stanwood’s comeback was fueled by Ryan Appleby who scored 10 of a game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. Marcus Steele had six of his 19 points in the fourth to assist in the comeback.

“It was great effort for both teams,” said Lake Stevens coach Norm Lowery. “Stanwood is an excellent team, our guys played hard. They will represent our conference in districts well. I thought our team played hard, but we had a tough spell at the end.”

In the winning effort, Paul Zweber had 10 rebounds for Stanwood. Matthew Stevens had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Lake Stevens.

Cascade 73, Monroe 62: Mike Skoor had game-high honors with 27 points, while teammate Marcus Hansen chipped in 19 for Cascade in the Wesco North game. Kyle Sasser led Monroe with 24 points.
