Stanwood dominates glass in win

STANWOOD – Senior post Aaron Boehme had a double-double with room to spare as the Stanwood boys basketball team handily beat the Arlington Eagles 75-51 in a rare Saturday night Wesco North clash.

Boehme’s 21 points tied his season high (Jan. 10 against Oak Harbor), and his 13 rebounds nearly matched Arlington’s total as a team as the Spartans controlled the boards all night, outrebounding the Eagles 30-14.

Stanwood junior Derek Anderson led all scorers with 23, and teammate Kameron Gambill added 13 as the surging Spartans won their seventh game in the past eight.

“We’re feeling like we’re just starting to play our best basketball,” said Stanwood head coach Brian Hunter.

Arlington guard Brett Smith led the Eagles with a season-high 15 points.

With the win, the Spartans remain in third place in the Wesco North division at 8-3, nearly clinching them a spot in the districts. But Hunter is not exactly ready to celebrate.

“We’re not thinking about the postseason,” said Hunter. “For us, it’s really is just one game at a time.”
