Stanwood knocks off Kentwood 17-7

KENT – The prospect of facing an undefeated football team on the road might have seemed daunting to some, but not to the Stanwood Spartans.

The Spartans upset the host Kentwood Conquerors 17-7 in a non-league game Saturday afternoon at French Field. The loss dropped Kentwood to 3-1. Stanwood improved to 3-1.

“The kids played hard the whole game,” Stanwood head coach Dick Abrams said. “The defense was great. If we hadn’t fumbled the ball on our own 10-yard line, we may have shut them out.”

The Spartans struck early, scoring on the first play of their opening drive. Senior quarterback Aaron Boehme took the snap on an option play and scooted around the right side for a 59-yard touchdown.

Kentwood tied the game in the second quarter on a 2-yard scoring run by Demetrius Bronson.

The Stanwood defense held Kentwood scoreless the rest of the way and limited the Conquerors to just 170 yards of total offense.

The Spartans took the lead for good in the third quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Ian Mai. Stanwood then ate up the clock with several long drives that kept Kentwood’s offense off the field.

“The key was in controlling the ball on offense in the second half,” Abrams said. “Clock control is a good way to hold a lead.”

Stanwood added its final touchdown with 5:30 remaining when Boehme threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Kameron Gambill. Boehme finished the night 6-for-8 passing.
