Stanwood pair seek repeat

STANWOOD – Daniel Redfern and Zach Tafoya of Stanwood began their title defense on a successful note, winning their quarterfinal match Thursday in the 4A District 1 boys tennis meet at Stanwood High School and the Stanwood Sports Club.

Redfern and Tafoya, the defending doubles champs, got by Nick Kang and Brian Bae of Jackson, 6-2, 6-2, and play Jesse Knutson and Spencer Mestel of Shorewood in the semifinals today. Play begins at 3 p.m.

Kang and Bae dropped into the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament and face Reed Pecha and Zack Stockwell of Snohomish in a loser-out match. Pecha and Stockwell fell 6-3, 6-2 to Knutson and Mestel.

In the other half of the doubles tournament, Scott Sheldon and Willie Guo of Edmonds-Woodway knocked off Kyle Koetje and Drew Kidd of Stanwood 6-3, 6-0 in one quarterfinal. In the other, Andy Bell and Aaron Sher of Snohomish came back from a second-set wipeout to defeat Ryan Cho and Steven Guo of Edmonds-Woodway 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.

In singles play, Wesco North No. 1 Chad Merkley of Snohomish advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rhett Bouche of Mountlake Terrace. He faces Alex Lin of Jackson. Lin was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Matt Nguyen of Cascade.

Wesco South No. 1 Richard Oam of Jackson moved on with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Steven Kesler of Lake Stevens. He faces Abraham Ahn of Kamiak in the semis. Ahn beat Brandon Kent of Snohomish 6-1, 6-3.
