Stanwood red hot; scores 107 points

STANWOOD – The nets at the Stanwood gym might need to be replaced, because they were getting scorched Friday night.

Stanwood shot 64.5 percent from the field and sank 20 of 26 free throws to cruise past Monroe 107-71 in Western Conference North Division play.

Its victory keeps Stanwood (10-1 in league, 13-2 overall) atop the division standings, a game ahead of Snohomish. Monroe falls to 3-8 in league play, 3-12 overall.

The Spartans were on fire all night, sinking 40 of 62 shots from 2-point range and seven of 13 from beyond the 3-point arc. They also put together a 39-point second quarter that gave them a 68-32 lead at the half.

“We played consistently in both the first and second halves,” said Stanwood coach Nate DuChesne. “We played all 12 kids and they were all scoring the ball, so it wasn’t a matter of trying to run up the score. We just wanted to go out and play our style of basketball and that’s what they did.”

Spartan point guard Ryan Appleby scored a team-high 20 points, while dishing out a school-record 20 assists for the game.

Teammate Marcus Steele also scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Three Stanwood JV players got to see some good minutes in the game too.

Justin Jamieson, Kyle Born and Dan Toshner all played considerable minutes, including the entire fourth quarter. Toshner won the JV-varsity swing-player scoring battle with four points.

Trevor Smith also came off the bench to chip in 15 points for the Spartans.

Kyle Sasser scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Bearcats’ offense.

Josh Waite added 17 more for the Bearcats.

Stanwood will host division runnerup Snohomish on Tuesday, in a contest that could be the decisive game in the race for the league title.
