Stanwood upsets Monroe

MONROE – Stanwood went into Monroe Stadium Saturday and pulled off a 2-1 upset of first-place Monroe.

The Spartans built a 2-0 lead on goals by Michelle Aikens in the 26th minute and Ashley Eskes in the 50th minute.

Monroe got within one in the 79th minute on a goal by Keena Hopkins and had a potential tying goal headed over the crossbar on a corner kick moments later.

Monroe out-shot Stanwood 23-9, but Stanwood goalie Nicol Ludwig made the lead stand up.

Lake Stevens 5, Arlington 0: Taylor Cochran had a goal and an assist and Kendra Anyan and Whitney Welch scored two goals each to lead Lake Stevens to the Wesco North win.

Girls swimming

Mukilteo Invitational: Kamiak’s Rikka Brunner won both her races in the 24-team event at the King County Aquatics Center. Brunner won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 8.88 seconds, posting nearly a seven-second margin of victory. She took the 100 backstroke in 59.23 seconds, two seconds faster than the runner-up. Kamiak was third in the team standings behind Class 3A powers Bellevue and Mercer Island. Shorecrest diver Samantha Young, who set a school record of 462.90 points in Friday’s District 1 state qualifying meet, won that competition with 418.75 points. Fourth-place Bainbridge was led by double winner Sarah Gleason (200 and 500 freestyle races). Sequim’s Summer Jackson also won two races, the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
