Stanwood wrestlers win team title at Marysville-Pilchuck tourney

Herald staff

MARYSVILLE – Three Stanwood wrestlers made it to championship matches and the Spartans had great results in their consolation matches as they won the Marysville-Pilchuck Premiere wrestling tournament team title Saturday night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Stanwood scored 182 team points, while Cascade took second with 173.5 and Peninsula was third with 159. Host Marysville-Pilchuck rounded out the top four places of the 17-team tournament with 144 points.

Cascade’s Jesse Calderon was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament after winning the 275-pound title with a 2-1 decision over M-P’s Matt Olesen.

Stanwood had Joe Webb (152), Clancy Seymour (189) and Mike Bear (215) all compete for respective tournament titles. Seymour, however, was the lone Spartan to walk away with a championship. As he tied his match up in the closing seconds of the third round with a reversal, his Olympic opponent sprained his ankle and couldn’t continue.

“It was a nice tournament for us because we wrestled real well. We’ve had a couple tough dual meets recently, but this is a nice turnaround before league starts up again,” said Stanwood coach Tom Wilfong. “Hopefully we’ll keep this momentum going back into league matches.”

Cascade had three champions for the tournament. Calderon at 275, Tony Kubec at 119 and Jesse Erickson at 171. Roger Garcia also had a second-place finish for the Bruins at 130.

Marysville-Pilchuck had four grapplers make it through to the final rounds. Irwin Weiser was the Tomahawks’ only champion with a victory in the 215-pound final over Stanwood’s Bear. John Hanks (103), Norman Orr (135) and Oelesen (275) all finished second for M-P.

Lakewood had two wrestlers in the finals, Brett Bailey at 135 and Dan Caldwell at 171. Bailey defeated Stanwood’s Orr to highlight the Cougars’ seventh-place finish.

Snohomish’s lone finalist was Brad Kihm, who won the 152-pound title.

Arlington’s Jimmy Jane was the Eagles’ stand-out performer by winning the 125-pound division.

Willie Ward led Monroe’s showing by taking second at 140 pounds.

Tyee Tournament: The Shorewood Thunderbirds wrestling team took third place in the Tyee Tournament held at Tyee High School in Seatac. Highline High School took first place in the eight-team event. The tournament paired schools in a series of dual tournaments with brackets, similar to a basketball tournament.

Shorewood won the opening meet of the day, downing Interlake 70-6. In the second round, the Thunderbirds lost to host Tyee 48-19. A loser bracket win over a team of unattached wrestlers by a 66-3 score advanced the Thunderbirds to the third-place final. In the final, Shorewood beat Bishop Blanchet 46-36.

Thunderbird Chris Morey, at 189 pounds, had a perfect day, winning all four of his matches, including three pins.

Tahoma Mat Classic Everett took second in the eight-team tournament behind host team Tahoma.
