Stanwood’s Carlson wins tennis championship

STANWOOD – Stanwood’s Michael Carlson can now include a league crown in his perfect collection of victories this season.

Carlson defeated Mount Vernon’s Kyle May, 6-0, 6-4 Saturday to claim the Western Conference North Division tennis championship.

Carlson, who has won all 19 of his matches this year, defeated Lake Stevens’ Juha Heinonen, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals to reach the championship round.

“He played excellently,” Stanwood coach Bill Walker said. “It’s amazing to see him play the way he did. He is a smart player. He is also very consistent.”

Cascade’s Chad Schroeder and Oak Harbor’s Daniel Hinkley, who defeated Schroeder, 7-5, 6-2 for third place, will join Carlson at next week’s district championship.

The doubles team of Blake Carbonatto and Danny Kruse brought Lake Stevens High School its first league championship by defeating Cascade’s Peter Allen and Josh McDonnell, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Sultan 2, Lynden Christian 0: Mindy Cramer scored a goal 17 minutes into the first half to give Sultan a 1-0 lead at half time. Heather Howard scored an insurance goal for Sultan.

North Diving Zones Wesco 4A: Tasha LaValle scored 330.40 points Saturday to capture the Wesco North Diving Championship. LaValle, along with Marysville-Pilchuck’s Brittany Berg (323.05) and Snohomish’s Taisha Atkin (307.70), all qualified for the state meet.

Lopez 3, Skykomish 0: At Lopez Island, Megan McCoy went 14 of 15 serving with five aces to lead the Lobos (8-1 league, 12-3 overall) over the Rockets (1-7) in straight sets 15-3, 15-4, 15-6. Rachel Post was 12-for-12 serving for Lopez in the Northwest B League match. Lauren Elings had seven kills for Lopez.

Meridian 67, Lakewood 13: Jessie Alderson had more than 360 total yards of offense Friday night to lead Meridian in a runaway victory over Lakewood.

Alderson, who rushed for 180 yards on 10 carries and scored five touchdowns, returned a punt and a kickoff each for 90-yard touchdowns to give Meridian a 15-7 first-quarter lead.

Chris Wilson and Stacey Kelly each scored touchdowns for Lakewood.
