Add a Super 32 title to Mason Phillips’ lengthening list of wrestling accomplishments.
The Stanwood senior, already a two-time Washington state champion, two-time defending national Greco-Roman champion and Cadet World team member, won the championship at 145 pounds at arguably the most prestigious preseason high school tournament in the country on Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Phillips, ranked seventh nationally by FloWrestling, defeated Quincy Monday of North Carolina in a 13-4 major decision in the title match.
Phillips, who has verbally committed to wrestle at the University of North Carolina next season, got past Pennsylvania’s Thayne Lawrence 7-4 in the quarterfinals, and needed two overtime periods to vanquish No. 11 Alex Facundo of Michigan in the semfinals.
Phillips will take aim at a third Mat Classic championship and an undefeated high school career when Stanwood wrestling opens the 2017-18 season on Nov. 30.
