Baker Lake sockeye opens to fishing for sockeye salmon on Saturday, July 23.
This will be the second year in a row that anglers can go after sockeye in a fishery that had traditionally been closed..
Officials say they’ve had nearly 8,300 sockeye return to the hatchery at Baker Lake an
d that they expect to meet their goals for spawning production.
About 3,600 of the salmon have been released into the lake so far and more are expected before the opener.
The Baker and Skagit rivers remain closed to salmon fishing and any bull trout caught in the lake must be released.
I’ve never fished for sockeye at Baker, but if the state keeps opening it, I’m going to have to check it out. I’ve caught sockeye in Alaska uses flies with small bits of red or green yarn tied on a red-colored hook.
Sockeye generally aren’t feeding aggressively, but they can be sometimes be triggered to strike a fly.
Anything you try should be pretty sparse.
