The girls soccer state tournament begins tonight and we have two local teams taking part in the action. Here’s a look at the two games:
Edmonds-Woodway vs. Gig Harbor
When: Tonight, 7 p.m.
Where: Edmonds Stadium
Background: The Edmonds-Woodway girls soccer team has won 11 of its past 12 games, including nine of its final 10 games in the regular season, and won the district championship over South rival Jackson to wrap up the District 1 No. 1 seed. They get a Gig Harbor girls soccer team that hasn’t appeared at state since 2007. The Tides haven’t won a state playoff game since 2003 when they beat E-W, ironically. The winner of this game plays either Beamer or Issaquah in a quarterfinal contest on Saturday. Gig Harbor earned its state berth with an impressive 3-0 victory over Kentlake on Saturday. Kate Frame scored twice, Emma Hendrickson added another goal and Aubrey Lindberg got the shutout.
Archbishop Murphy vs. North Kitsap
When: Tonight, 7 p.m.
Where: Snohomish H.S.
Background:After an up-and-down season, the Archbishop Murphy girls soccer team won its first two games of the district tournament – both shutouts – before losing in the final to earn the district’s No. 2 seed. The Wildcats now get North Kitsap (10-2-5) in the first round of state. Last year, Murphy beat the Vikings in the first round of state 4-0 so there’s might be a little revenge factor for North Kitsap. North Kitsap is led by Abbie Wright, Ashley Cole and Delanee Nilles. The Vikings’ goalkeeper is Maggie Alikpala. Here’s an interesting story about the history of the North Kitsap girls soccer team.
