State soccer roundup: Lake Stevens, E-W, King’s, T-birds win

Four of six area teams won first-round matches Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals.

CAMAS — Maddie Kemp’s goal in the 33rd minute was the difference in Camas’ 1-0 win over Jackson in a first-round match in the 4A State Tournament Wednesday at Doc Harris Stadium.

Kemp’s goal came off a Papermakers’ corner kick, and when the Timberwolves failed to clear their lines, Kemp tapped in the loose ball to put Camas in front.

Both teams had chances from that point forward, with both the Timberwolves and Papermakers hitting the crossbar with drives in the final 15 minutes.

Jackson goalkeeper Brooke Vandermolen also made a few big saves to keep the deficit at one.

But Kemp’s goal held up for Camas (17-2), which will advance to play Bellarmine Prep in a quarterfinal match. Jackson ends the season at 16-2-1.

Lake Stevens 2, Tahoma 1 (S0)

MAPLE VALLEY — The Vikings required a penalty shootout to book their place in the 4A state quarterfinals, beating Tahoma 3-2 on spot kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time Wednesday.

Tahoma forced extra time after scoring in the waning moments of regulation.

Lake Stevens (15-3-1) will travel to Skyline for a quarterfinal contest this weekend in a rematch of a Nov. 1 Wes-King district encounter that was also won by the Vikings in a shootout.

Tahoma ends its season at 14-4-1.

3A State

Shorewood 1, Mount Spokane 0

SHORELINE — The Thunderbirds scored a second-half goal that was the difference in a 3A state opener against the Wildcats at Shoreline Stadium.

Shorewood (12-6-2) will travel to Kamiakin for a quarterfinal matchup this weekend, and Mount Spokane ends its season at 9-10-1.

Edmonds-Woodway 1, Lakeside 0

SEATTLE — The Warriors’ vaunted defense made a first-half goal by Sophia Martino-Crew stand up in a victory over the Lions in a 3A first-round match Wednesday at Southwest Athletic Complex.

Edmonds-Woodway (17-3) will have a stern test awaiting it in this weekend’s quarterfinal round, when the Warriors travel to Gig Harbor to face the 19-0 Tides.

1A State

King’s 4, Vashon Island 0

SHORELINE — Peri Welch assisted on each of the Knights’ first three goals in King’s victory over Vashon Island in a 1A State Tournament opening-round match Wednesday at Woolsey Stadium.

Callie Wright, Olivia Gabelein and Taylor Faris also scored for King’s (18-2).

King’s will go on the road for its quarterfinal match, and will face King’s Way Christian (15-1-2), a 1-0 winner over Seattle Academy on Wednesday.

Vashon Island ends its season at 9-8-2.
