AUBURN – Veronica Ladines used her bat and her arm to help the Stilly Valley Little League Softball 9-10 All Stars earn their first state championship Saturday.
Ladines hit a two-run triple and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a throwing error in the third inning of Stilly Valley’s 7-3 title-game victory over Bainbridge Island.
Lynsey Amundson pitched six innings and struck out nine Bainbridge Island batters to earn the win in Saturday’s final.
The Stilly Valley All Stars, comprised of girls from Arlington and Lakewood, lost just once -to Bainbridge Island in the first game of the championship round – during the 10-team double-elimination state tournament.
The Stilly Valley All Stars advanced to the state playoffs after winning the District 1 title earlier in the month at Quake Field in Arlington.
Ladines pitched a perfect game – striking out 15 batters in six innings – against Northshore Little League earlier in the tournament.
The remaining members of the Stilly Valley All Stars are: Kaylee Aune, Alyssa Campbell, Syvannah Cram, Savannah Diemer, Lindsay Kerney, Lyndsay Leatherman, Jessica Ludwig, Kayla Mashbun, Katelyn McDonald, Kaylyn Myers, and Allison Rosenbach.
The team was coached by Ryan Knudson and Traci Kerney and managed by Curt Ladines.
Baseball
Maltby Vipers state champs again: The Maltby Vipers U-15 Colt Baseball team won its third straight state title Sunday, defeating Graham 1-0 in the Northwest Regional Baseball Championship game at Lindbergh High School.
Comprised of boys from Snohomish and Everett, the Vipers won the U-13 state championship in 2004 and the U-14 title in 2005.
The Vipers advance to the Western Zone Tournament to represent the Northwest Region, beginning play on Thursday in San Jose, Calif.
Members of the team are: Max Foster, Brian Wolfe, Jake Robinett, Casey Robinett, Bryant Robbins, Cameron Woolsey, Nick Klop, Reed Pecha, Riley Davis, Dan Carney, Bradon Allen, and Aaron West. They are coached by John Robinett, Jim Foster, and Dan Wolfe.
Karate
Everett students medal at national championship: Three students from Pacific Karate in Everett won a combined eight medals at the USA National Karate Federation championship held July 14-16 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Cabrian Taggart, 11, of Everett won gold medals in intermediate kata (forms) and intermediate kumite (sparring).
Vienna Krumwiede, 10, of Everett won a gold medal in advanced kata and a bronze medal in advanced kumite.
Whitney Lucas, 13, of Everett won a silver medal in intermediate kata.
Taggart, Krumwiede, and Lucas also garnered bronze medals in the team kata category.
