SEATTLE – Sandy Brondello scored a season-high 23 points, and Miami held Seattle’s Lauren Jackson to one basket in the second half Thursday night as the Sol defeated the Storm 70-57.
Miami (3-0) remained atop the Eastern Conference with a stifling defense that slowed Seattle’s up-tempo offense to a walk. The Storm (2-2) averaged 73.3 points in their first three games but were frustrated all night by Miami’s defense.
Jackson, the rookie from Australia who is Seattle’s leading scorer, led her team with 16 points but scored only four in the second half. Katy Steding scored 12 for the Storm.
Seattle starters managed only 24 points. The Storm shot a franchise-record 91 percent (19 of 21) from the free throw line to keep the game close until the final 10 minutes.
Ruth Riley’s basket with 10:14 left broke a 45-45 tie and ignited a 25-12 Miami run the rest of the game. Sheri Sam added 15 for Miami.
