SEATTLE — The Seattle Storm have signed head coach and Director of Player Personal Brian Agler to a three-year extension the team announced on Friday.
Agler, who still has one year remaining on his existing contract joined the Storm in 2008 and led the team to a WNBA championship in 2010. Agler also earned coach of the year honors that year as the team tied a WNBA record for wins in a season with 28. Last season, Agler tied the all-time record for wins last season with his 211th victory on Sept. 11. Agler, who will look to break the record in 2012, is currently tied with former Houston Comets coach Van Chancellor.
“I’m proud of what we have built in Seattle and excited to continue,” Agler said in a press release. “The Storm is a remarkable franchise with committed owners, strong leadership, incredibly loyal fans and, in Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, two of the best ever to play the game at their positions. I’m privileged to be part of this team and eager to build on our successes.”
Agler has led the Storm to 20-plus wins in each of his four seasons in Seattle. Storm president and CEO Karen Bryant said the team is pleased to keep Agler in the fold through at least 2015.
“We are pleased and excited to have Brian with us through 2015,” Bryant said. “Brian is the winningest coach in women’s basketball with a worldwide reputation for building great teams. He’s already showed us what he’s capable of and we are looking forward to more.”
Prior to joining the Storm, Agler was the assistant coach for the San Antonio Silver Stars from 2005-07. He was the general manager and coach of the Minnesota Lynx from 1999-2002 and also was the head coach of the Columbus Quest in the American Basketball League from 1996-99.
