Sultan explodes for 603 yards and 10 rushing TDs

VASHON ISLAND – In an emotional non-conference season opener, the Sultan Turks dismantled Vashon 74-0 Friday night.

“The kids played for Anthony,” Sultan coach Jim MacDicken said, referring to Anthony Cunningham.

The Turks’ outstanding nose tackle drowned in June.

“When they went out of the locker room they said ‘Let’s do it for Anthony,’” MacDicken said.

Five Sultan players ran for touchdowns as the Turks rolled up 603 yards rushing. Brennen Deveraux and Josh Mann each ran for three touchdowns. Tim Meyer added a pair of scoring runs.

Fumble recoveries by Ben Lukone, Andy Kincaid and Jared Castillo led to three Sultan touchdowns in the first quarter. Sultan led 48-0 at halftime.

“We had a ton of people do a ton of things,” MacDicken said. “But they’re not overly impressed with themselves. They know they’ve got a big task (at Cashmere) this week.”

Cedarcrest 32, Nathan Hale 0: Jeff Eldred threw touchdown passes to Nick Ritter and Philip Knight, and Chet Schroeter had two touchdown runs and two point-after-conversion kicks to lead Cedarcrest to the non-conference win. Schroeter carried 11 times for 138 yards.

Cedarcrest amassed 390 total yards, 304 rushing on 42 carries, and held Nathan Hale to 58.

Sehome 28, Oak Harbor 27: Oak Harbor missed a point-after-touchdown kick early in the fourth quarter and then turned the ball over on downs at the Sehome 30-yard line with three minutes to play. Gabe Vest led Oak Harbor’s 377-yard rushing performance in the non-conference season opener, running for 171 yards and two TDs on 17 carries.
