Sultan explodes for 603 yards and 10 rushing TDs

VASHON ISLAND – In an emotional non-conference season opener, the Sultan Turks dismantled Vashon 74-0 Friday night.

“The kids played for Anthony,” Sultan coach Jim MacDicken said, referring to Anthony Cunningham.

The Turks’ outstanding nose tackle drowned in June.

“When they went out of the locker room they said ‘Let’s do it for Anthony,’” MacDicken said.

Five Sultan players ran for touchdowns as the Turks rolled up 603 yards rushing. Brennen Deveraux and Josh Mann each ran for three touchdowns. Tim Meyer added a pair of scoring runs.

Fumble recoveries by Ben Lukone, Andy Kincaid and Jared Castillo led to three Sultan touchdowns in the first quarter. Sultan led 48-0 at halftime.

“We had a ton of people do a ton of things,” MacDicken said. “But they’re not overly impressed with themselves. They know they’ve got a big task (at Cashmere) this week.”
