Sultan freshman shines in 7-2 win

SULTAN – Freshman standout A.J. Gonzales assisted on three goals and scored one in the first half to lead the Sultan boys soccer team past South Whidbey 7-2 in Saturday’s North Cascades Conference matinee.

“He’s my super freshman,” said Sultan coach Mark Raney, whose Turks have won 11 consecutive games. “A.J. has this great vision, where he sees two moves in advance. He makes other players better. This team was good last year, but the distribution wasn’t as good. That’s the difference this season, the distribution.”

A Gonzales corner kick two minutes into the first half found senior Billy Brooks, who headed in the first of his two goals in the opening 40 minutes. The Turks (11-0, 11-0) extended their lead 12 minutes later on Gonzales’ ninth goal of the season, giving Sultan a 2-0 lead.

“This is an extremely talented group of young men,” Raney said. “They are dedicated to returning to the state tournament and finishing better than second like we did last year. It is a thrill to coach them.”

Gonzales picked up two more assists and Brayton Knapp scored his team-leading 18th goal of the season all before the end of the first half. Andy Morrell, Andrew Tolson and David Schmidt also scored for first-place Sultan.

Kevin Dunigan and Ben Walker each scored a goal in the second half for South Whidbey (4-7).
