This past Wednesday I was assigned to photograph the vacating and cleaning of an old “junkyard” location in Sultan. Here’s the link to Jeff Switzer’s story:
I arrived pretty early on Wednesday morning to find a group of Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies securing the location and arresting one of the men who lived in the area. Due to the nature of the story, editors chose to use an image of Theron Saluteen being arrested and escorted off of the property for the front page of the newspaper. The image served its purpose, but part of me wanted to see this image run in black and white across the whole front page. There was something about David Waugh’s face that painted the whole picture for me. The image was made while David watched his old friend Theron, or “Tad” as he refers to him, being removed from the property. Later that same day, David told me Tad had taught him how to read, fish, and make pancakes over an open fire right there on that land. I think you can see the disappointment in David’s eyes.
