Postcard from New York
You know something big is going on when Seattle coach Pete Carroll trades in his usual outfit of khakis and a Seahawks hoodie for a suit, and that’s what the coach did Friday morning.
Carroll and Denver Broncos coach John Fox shared the stage at New York’s Rose Theatre for a joint press conference that, if you’ve been here all week, featured a lot of questions and answers you’ve already heard.
It’s a close race this week for most-asked question to a head coach between Carroll being asked how he’s changed since he was the coach of the New York Jets, and Fox being asked about coming back the heart surgery that sidelined him for part of the season.
To rewind for a second to Thursday night, I’d like to pat myself on the back for maintaining my professionalism while at a party I’m calling “Some Super Bowl party that Herald photographer Jenny Buchanan got us into” because I never figured out what it was for. There seems to be a lot of parties happening this week. Anyway, a few athletes were at this party, one of whom was 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, and it took tremendous restraint to not yell “Kam Chancellor!” just to see if Davis would flinch.
On the streets of New York, the buzz continues to grow, and Seahawks fans continue to arrive in droves. Sports Radio KJR’s Dave Mahler hosted his show at a midtown Manhattan bar Friday evening and it was packed with Seahawks fans.
One of the cool things about the media set up at a Super Bowl is walking around radio row and seeing who you might run into. Friday it was a pair of former Seahawks who were a lot of fun to cover in their playing days: Matt Hasselbeck and Lawyer Milloy. Hasselbeck, who is doing TV work for Fox Sports 1 this week, seems destined for a post-playing career in TV if he wants it.
And finally, during my usual weekly hit with Jeff Aaron on KRKO, I was chided for being in my hotel room on a Friday night, so in the interest of not making The Fish angry, I’ll head out and see what this little town has to offer.
