Jeff Weible enjoyed his time at Shorewood, but he simply couldn’t pass up a chance to return to his alma mater.
Weible resigned after five seasons as head football coach at Shorewood High School to take a teaching position at North Kitsap High, where he graduated in 1989. He will interview for the North Kitsap head football coaching job the week of Jan. 24.
Shorewood finished with a 4-6 record under Weible this season, including 3-6 in the Western Conference South Division. The Thunderbirds went 27-20 during his tenure, including back-to-back 6-3 records and playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002.
“I’m real proud of what we did there,” Weible said. “We took a program that struggled for a few years and turned it into a consistent winner.”
Weible cited as highlights his relationship with Shorewood players and coaches, and the fact that his Thunderbirds defeated rival Shorecrest four of five times.
However, the 33-year-old Poulsbo resident looks forward to the chance to work closer to home (North Kitsap High is in Poulsbo). He won’t have to take the Edmonds/Kingston Ferry every day, and he can be closer to his wife, who is expecting a child in May.
Weible played baseball at the University of Washington before taking his first head football coaching job at then brand-new Klahowya, where he went 1-17 in two seasons before arriving at Shorewood.
