STANWOOD – A few things have changed since last year’s Northwest District 4A girls golf tournament.

The champions, however, have not.

Shorewood sophomore golfing sensation Kim Shin shot a 4-over par 76 during Monday’s final round to capture the district title for the second consecutive year. Shin fired a first-round even-par 72 at Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor last week and finished the tournament with two-round score of 148.

Last year, Shin finished with an even-par 72 at Everett’s Legion Memorial Golf Course to win the title. She went on to finish fourth at the state tournament.

The top 15 finishers qualify for next week’s state tournament, which will be held at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.

“This year is a lot different from last year,” Shin said. “This year I played a lot safer golf than I did last season. I’ve matured. I played smarter and focused on not making any mistakes. I wouldn’t have done that last year.”

After bogeying three of the final four holes, Shin sank a 25-foot putt on the 294-yard 18th hole to record her second birdie of the day. Her first birdie came on the front nine after she knocked a pitching wedge to 12 feet on No. 3 – a 119-yard par 3.

Cascade sophomore Renee Skidmore followed a first-round 80 with an 83 on Monday to finish second for the second consecutive season. Playing partner and Oak Harbor golfer Kate Waller also shot an 83 on Monday to finish third, two strokes behind Skidmore.

“I’ve been a slump for the past week,” Skidmore said. “I haven’t been hitting greens and that has hurt me. But overall, I am happy. I have to just let it go next week at the state tournament.”

Freshman Rachel Casselman, who finished sixth in the field of 42 golfers with rounds of 87 and 92, led Kamiak to its second team championship in as many years. The Knights, who also qualified senior Shoko Natsume (90-91-181) and junior Marie Krebsbach (89-93-182), won the title with a score of 123.

“We did this with a great bunch of girls,” Kamiak coach Charlie LeWarne said. “This is the best team we’ve had going to the state tournament. It was just a matter of playing our best and being prepared.”

Junior Kalynn Simmons, who posted rounds of 89-87 to finish fifth, and Casey Westerman, who had rounds of 94-95 to place 15th, led Monroe to a second-place finish with a total score of 97. Oak Harbor finished third with 94 points and Lake Stevens was fourth with 65.9 points.

Northwest District 3A girls: Senior Lauren Ressler of Bellingham shot a 4-over-par 76 Monday at Skagit Country Club for a two-day total of 147 and took medalist honors in the Class 3A district girls’ golf tournament.

Freshman Blair Ressler, Lauren’s sister, was second after an 82 for a 166 total.

Burlington-Edison took the team title with 87.5 points. Bellingham was next with 75, followed by North Mason 44, Sequim 40.4, Ferndale 24.5 and Squalicum 8.5.

No athletes from Meadowdale or Lynnwood qualified for the state tournament.

The Ressler sisters qualified for next week’s state tournament in Yakima. Also advancing were Jessi Gebhardt of Bellingham (seventh, 96-96-192) and Ferndale’s Jenni Brozovich (eighth, 96-97-193).

The top 12 qualified for state.

Northwest District 3A boys: Meadowdale’s John Laws shot a two-round total of 153 to take third place at Bellingham Golf and Country Club and qualify for the state tournament. Palmer Balke of Meadowdale and Austin Beatty of Lynnwood also finished in the top 13 to qualify for the state tournament. After shooting a two-under par 70 in the first round, Sehome’s Luke Bennett shot a 78 to take first place honors.
