T-birds unbeaten with tennis win over E-W

SHORELINE – Shorewood kept its boys tennis record unblemished on Monday with a 4-3 Western Conference South Division win over Edmonds-Woodway at Shoreview Park.

The victory keeps Shorewood in first place with a 12-0 record. Edmonds-Woodway drops to 9-3 and into a tie with Jackson for third place in the South.

After losing the first set 4-6, junior No. 2 singles player Justin Michelson of Shorewood rallied to beat Edmonds-Woodway senior Chris Miniker in the next two set, 6-4, 7-5.

“The No. 2 singles match was the deciding match,” Shorewood head coach Corliss Liekkio said. “(Michelson) hung in there and dug deep for a nice win. I was real proud of him.”

The same thing happened to Shorewood’s No. 2 doubles team of junior Keith Schneider and sophomore Evan Turner. After dropping the first game to junior Eric Kent and junior Matt McCleary in a tie-breaker 6-7 (7), the Shorewood duo rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-2.

Shorewood next plays at Meadowdale (8-1) on Wednesday in a match that could determine the winner of the Wesco South Division.

Cascade 7, Marysville-Pilchuck 0: Cascade’s Peter Allen had the closest match of the day, downing Brian Belknap 7-5, 6-1.

Snohomish 6, Mount Vernon 1: Snohomish stayed atop the Wesco North Division and ran its season record to a perfect 10-0 with a win over Mount Vernon.
