Tacoma New Tribune basketball rankings

Before I get to the new TNT rankings, I need to express how entertaining the Jackson vs. Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball game was on Friday.

Thanks to the thrilling pace, great individual performances and an exciting-until-the-end finish, it was one of the better girls games I’ve seen in awhile — definitely the best I’ve watched this season. In the end, Jackson beat E-W 69-65.

It was my first time seeing Jackson’s Erin Feeney play this season. Feeney, who scored 29 points, is vastly improved in so many ways. Her outside shot was deadly, as usual, but she also scored inside and made a few key defensive plays.

Jackson and E-W should be good for years to come.

Jackson has no seniors; its starting lineup featured two juniors (Feeney and Chanel Sam), sophomores Megan McArthur and Leigh-Ann Haataja, and freshman Kristin Stoffel. By the way, Stoffel, a 5-foot-11 forward/post, is one of the most impressive freshmen I’ve seen since I’ve worked for The Herald. She tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds Friday, showing unusual patience and offensive skill.

E-W is young too. The Warriors’ starting five includes two seniors (Jennifer Singh and Abby Butler). But the rest are two sophomores (Alex Kenney and Angela Woods) and freshman Madeline Kasper.

I hope E-W and Jackson collide at some point during the upcoming Class 4A District 1 tournament. It will be interesting to see how they fare against Snohomish, assuming either E-W or Jackson clashes with the Panthers at districts.

Snohomish and Jackson are both part of the latest Tacoma News Tribune girls basketball rankings, which cover 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A classifications.

Other local girls teams in the rankings are Meadowdale (3A) and Archbishop Murphy (2A).

Here are the Tacoma News Tribune boys basketball rankings. Local boys teams in the mix are Meadowdale (3A), Archbishop Murphy (2A), and King’s (1A).

Archbishop Murphy (6-0 Cascade Conference, 8-3 overall) plays host to King’s (7-1, 12-3) tonight in a key game between the league’s top two teams. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Murphy edged King’s 45-43 Jan. 7 in Shoreline.
