John Tamargo, a former major league catcher who has won more than 1,000 games as a minor league manager, will manage the Everett AquaSox this year.
The parent Seattle Mariners announced their managing and coaching assignments throughout the minor league system Tuesday, and the short-season Class A AquaSox got a man with a vast baseball background.
Tamargo enters his 36th professional season, including 26 years as a coach or manager at the major or minor league levels. He has a 1,050-923 managerial record with the Mets, Astros and Brewers organizations.
“He’s a very seasoned veteran and he brings a great deal of experience to the table,” said Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, who was the Mets’ farm director when Tamargo managed in the Mets’ system. Among those who played for Tamargo is Pedro Grifol, the former AquaSox manager who is the Mariners’ minor league coordinator.
“John has done so many different things in the game,” Zduriencik said. “John is familiar with both myself and Pedro, he’s a very strong personality and he’s very disciplined.”
Tamargo, a backup catcher to Ted Simmons with the Cardinals and Gary Carter with the Expos, batted .242 in 135 major league games between 1976-80.
Among other assignments announced by the Mariners, former AquaSox manager Jose Moreno will manage the Mariners’ rookie level club in Peoria, Ariz. Andy Bottin, a Stanwood resident in the offseason, will return as coach in Peoria.
