Chris Hoy of Edmonds won a silver medal at the Japan/USA Goodwill Karate Championships held March 27 in Tokyo.

Hoy, a 17-year-old junior at Meadowdale High School, placed second in the high school-and-up division in kata (classical forms). He also placed fifth in kumite (sparring).

Hoy earned his spot on the U.S. junior team by working his way through local, regional and national AAU competitions. He won a gold medal and two silvers at the AAU Junior Olympic Games held last summer in Detroit. His performance at the Junior Olympics earned him a spot on the 40-member U.S. team that traveled to Japan.

Hoy, a second-degree black belt who began training at the age of 6, was the only Puget Sound area athlete on the squad.

Tae Kwon Do

Terrace club brings home 14 medals: Nine students from Richards’ Tae Kwon Do in Mountlake Terrace brought home 14 medals from the 2004 Washington State Tae Kwan Do Championships, held March 27 at Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Leading the way was Rachel Dalive, who won gold in both forms (technique) and sparring.

Other gold medal winners included Charlotte Sawyer (sparring), Nickolay Osokin (sparring), Ian Broadie (sparring) and Michelle Gundersen (sparring).

The club finished the competition with six gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Gymnastics

Del Pozo wins all-around: Tasha Del Pozo, a Level 7 gymnast who competes for the Marysville-based Rising Stars, won the all-around in the 9-year-old division at the April Invitational held April 3 in Kirkland.

Del Pozo, from Stanwood, placed first in both the vault (9.45) and the floor exercises (9.6) en route to winning the all-around title with a score of 37.35.
