Ten runs not enough for Edmonds-Woodway

TACOMA – Sometimes 10 runs just aren’t enough.

After jumping out to an early 10-run lead, the Bothell baseball team had to hold on to defeat Edmonds-Woodway 16-10 in a quarterfinal game of the 4A state tournament at Heidelberg Park.

Trailing 10-0 going into the top of the third inning, E-W initiated a nine-run rally to pull to within one.

“We made it exciting,” E-W head coach Matt Barker said.

The Warriors had nine of their 11 hits in the inning, including two home runs by senior Owen Jones (2-for-3).

Kyle Long also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-3 for the Warriors with a triple.

After reaching on an error, E-W finally tied the score in the top of the fifth, only to see Bothell recapture the lead in the bottom part of the inning.

“We tied it,” Barker said. “That was cool.”

The Warriors were plagued by six errors, helping keep several Cougar rallies alive. Both runs in the bottom of the fifth were unearned.

“It’s not like they weren’t hitting the ball,” Barker said. “But we helped them.”
