Terrace comeback falls short

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – By the time the Mountlake Terrace boys basketball team figured out how to score on Lynnwood’s defense, the gap was too large to overcome.

The Royals used a pressure defense and capitalized on 11 Hawks turnovers to run up a 26-10 halftime lead en route to a 51-44 victory in a Wesco South matchup Saturday.

Mountlake Terrace (0-2 in division, 0-2 overall) cut down on its turnovers after the intermission – and outscored Lynnwood 34-25 – but was unable to overcome the 19 points it spotted Lynnwood. The Royals outscored the Hawks 23-4 in the opening quarter.

“We handled the pressure better in the third,” Hawks coach Nalin Sood said. “(We) dug too deep a hole. We got within five (points) but couldn’t get all the way out.”

The Royals (1-1, 2-1) were led by Nathan Rudd’s 14 points, closely followed by Brennen Grubb with 13 and Jeremy Rudd with 12.

Josh Griffin led the Hawks second-half rally, scoring 13 of his game-high 18 points after the break. Griffin also grabbed 12 rebounds to record a double-double in the loss.

After the game, Sood credited the Royals for winning the game.

“You can’t just say (Mountlake Terrace) lost because of what we did,” he said. “We lost the game tonight because of a lot of what Lynnwood did. They forced us into those deficiencies.”
