Terrace volleyball team ties for 1st place in South

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – Mountlake Terrace (6-2 division, 9-4 overall) overcame the tension of a potential title match to defeat Western Conference South Division leader Lynnwood (6-2, 8-5) 3-15, 3-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-13 Thursday and move into a tie for first place with the Royals with one regular season match remaining.

The key to the comeback win for Mountlake Terrace came after the second game when Hawks coach Susan Miller noticed her team’s jitters and took them aside. Instead of using their home-court advantage, the Hawks found the packed house disturbing.

“It’s your game,” Miller said to her team. “The fans are behind you, so use them to your advantage.”

After the pep talk, Mountlake Terrace won the last three games.

The Hawks play Shorewood Tuesday. Lynnwood plays Meadowdale.

Mountlake Terrace’s Eun Oh apparently likes the number 17. She was perfect from the service line with 17 serves. She also had 17 saves and 17 digs, accompanied by 44 assists. Her teammate Kelsey Voetmann had 27 kills and nine blocks.

For Lynwood, Jenna Huston had 21 kills, 23 digs and 10 blocks. Tricia Bartlette had 46 assists, 14 digs and six aces.

Edmonds-Woodway 3, Meadowdale 2: At Meadowdale H.S., Morgan Carter had 12 kills and Tiana Roma posted 11 kills and two blocks for the Warriors (4-4 league, 7-6 overall) in their 15-3, 15-11, 8-16, 8-15,15-9 Wesco South win. Also for E-W, Sara Allen recorded 18 assists and Haley Shellhorn had 13 digs. For the Mavericks (5-3, 8-5), Melissa Frisk had five kills, Lauren Marty had 14 kills and two aces and setter Mira Dermendjieva earned 43 assists.

Kamiak 3, Shorewood 0: At Kamiak H.S., Keri McDonnel had 38 assists and teammate Heather Hetzer had 18 kills to lead Kamiak (5-3 in league, 7-6 overall) to the 16-14, 15-11, 15-11 Wesco South victory. Joanne Yang had nine kills for Shorewood(4-4, 6-7).

Everett 3, Jackson 1: At Everett H.S., Morgan Bagge and Sharon Bjella combined for 23 kills and 38 digs to lead Everett (4-4 in league, 7-6 overall) to the 3-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-4 Wesco South victory. Jamie Crockett had 13 kills for Jackson’s (2-6, 5-8). Everett’sEmily Olson had 31 digs and 31 assists.

Shorecrest 3, Mariner 0: At Shorecrest H.S., Haley Martin had 11 kills and six digs to help Shorecrest (4-4 league, 8-5 overall) beat Mariner 0-8, 1-10) 15-3, 15-7, 15-9 in a Wesco South match. Kelly Herold had 26 assists and 12 digs for the Scots, while Leda Grembowski had seven kills. For Mariner, Nicole Mauge had three service aces and 13 assists, Amanda Kerr had four kills and seven blocks, Tierra Campbell had three kills and eight blocks and Sarah Fitzgeralds had 11 digs.

Stanwood 3, Oak Harbor 0: At Stanwood H.S., Spartans senior Danna Boskovich played in her last game and was all over the court, helping teammates Christina Palmer, Lindsey Signer and Katelin Parks to post 10 kills apiece in the Wesco North Division match. Stanwood (5-2 league, 11-2 overall) won 15-12, 15-5, 15-8. Oak Harbor is 4-4, 7-7.

Cascade 3, Mount Vernon 0: At Mount Vernon H.S., Cascade (6-1 league, 10-2 overall) produced a dominating performance in its 15-0, 15-1, 15-6 Wesco North Division victory over the Bulldogs (1-6, 1-12). LuAnn Anderson had 14 kills for the Bruins.

Snohomish 3, Arlington 0: At Snohomish H.S., Megan Silver had 11 kills and 10 blocks for the Panthers (5-2 league, 11-2 overall), while Annie Hots was 17-of-17 serving in their 15-11, 15-12, 15-5 Wesco North Division win over Arlington. For the Eagles (1-6, 1-12), Maureen Peper had six kills and Vicki Frank posted seven.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Lake Stevens 0: At Lake Stevens H.S., the Tomahawks (7-0 in league, 13-0 overall) clinched the Wesco North championship by defeating Lake Stevens (2-5, 3-10) in straight sets, 15-12, 15-5, 15-7. Mariko Colverdale had 11 kills and two blocks for the Tomahawks, while the Vikings’ Deanna Cooper had eight kills.

Mount Vernon Christian 3, Shoreline Christian 2 (shootout): Jeremey Prins had a goal for Shoreline Christian in the Northwest A/B game.

Snohomish 3, Monroe 1: Carrie Patten, Christy Dettmer and Courtney Waterhouse all scored in Snohomish’s second-half, come-from-behind Wesco North victory. Monroe’s Shaelynn Brown scored her 22nd goal, a Monroe school record.

Cascade 4, Stanwood 0 Heather Hughes scored two goals, Stefanie Baines had two assists and Megan Lienhard had a goal and two assists as Cascade completed an undefeated regular season with the Wesco Northg victory.

Lake Stevens 3, Arlington 2: Arlington took an early 2-0 lead in its Wesco North game with scores by Megan Thomas and Greta Bowen, but could not answer three consecutive Vikings scores by Allyce Van Hooser, Malea Russum and Hillary Mace.

Marysville-Pilchuck 2, Mount Vernon 1: Goals by Brianna Lundberg and Whitney Carlson put the Tomahawks in the driver’s seat and provided a Wesco North Division win.

Shorewood 2, Mountlake Terrace 0: Marissa Williams put two into the back of the net to clinch the Wesco South Division title for the Thunderbirds.

Shorecrest 1, Edmonds-Woodway 1: Shorecrest’s Ashley Baker scored in the seventh minute of the Wesco South game. Nine minutes later, Jordan Bishop tied the score for the Warriors. Goalie Theresa Hamilton made a big save with 10 minutes left when she got a hand on a ball kicked by Shorecrest, made a deflection and gave the defense a chance to clear the ball.

Kamiak 1, Jackson 0: Amy Galyan waited at the top of the goalkeeper’s box for a pass from fellow Knight Melanie Bonhet to defeat Jackson in a Wesco South match.

Everett 1, Mariner 0: Seagull Amy Miller took advantage of a cross from teammate Amy Hudson to score the only goal in the Wesco South game.

Bush 1, Archbishop Murphy 0: Archbishop Murphy had 28 shots on goal compared to only eight for Bush. But Bush’s lone goal led it to victory in a non-conference game.

4A Northwest District meet: The Wesco South’s fourth-seeded doubles team of Kris and Kory Pope from Jackson upset the North’s first-seeded team of Blake Carbonatto and Danny Kruse of Lake Stevens. After losing the first set, the Popes won a second-set tiebreaker to stave off defeate and went on to win the third set as well. In singles play, Josh Yuse of Edmonds-Woodway, the South Division’s third seed, upset second-seeded Kyle May of Mount Vernon by winning a third-set tiebreaker. Both top-seeded singles players, Michael Carlson of Stanwood and Jeff Jablonski of Shorewood, advanced to the semifinals. The No. 1 doubles team from the South, Chris Minaker and Eli Shields of Edmonds-Woodway, also advanced.
