Terrace wins another nailbiter with Cascade

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – Earlier this year, when Cascade and Mountlake Terrace played each other in a regular-season, league baseball game, Terrace won a 2-1 thriller.

Saturday’s contest was no different.

This time it took eight gut wrenching innings before the Hawks defeated the Bruins 6-5 in a first-round Wesco 4A baseball playoff game.

Aaron Heuer singled in Zach Gretch with the winning run after Gretch hit a one-out single and stole second base.

“We’ve found a way to win these one run games,” Terrace coach Andrew Watters said. “The kids have the confidence to get it done.”

Terrace jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, but the Bruins kept chipping away. Cascade scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and finally tied it up with a run in the fifth.

Nobody scored in the sixth or seventh innings, sending the game into extra innings.

Terrace relief pitcher Matt Hornecker (2-0) retired Cascade in order in the top of the eighth, setting up Heuer’s game winning hit.

“I have nine seniors on the team,” Watters said. “I’m happy for them.”

Terrace next plays Marysville-Pilchuck 4 p.m. Monday at Everett Memorial Stadium. The loser-out game will be for third place in the Wesco 4A.
