SEATTLE — While some scouts are putting Washington’s Jake Locker at the top of the class of quarterbacks who could come out for the 2010 NFL draft, at least one well-known draft scout is not totally sold on the junior from Ferndale.
CBS Sports’ Rob Rang, who has watched Locker since his high school days, said the UW quarterback has all the tools to be a high draft pick but that several teams have told him Locker is a “borderline first-round” pick if he comes out this year.
“There’s no denying he’s got better tools than any other quarterback” eligible to come out this year, Rang said. “But the talk about him going No. 1, that’s crazy. He hasn’t even finished a season (at UW).”
Locker has emerged as a possible candidate for the top quarterback prospect after Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford hurt his shoulder for a second time this season. If Locker is projected as a top-10 pick in the 2010 draft, it might be hard for the Huskies’ signal-caller to stick around for his senior season.
But Rang is among the people who believe that Locker is still not ready to make the jump.
“If he couldn’t harness all that talent because he came out too early, it would be a shame — not only for the program and the Washington fans, but also for Jake,” Rang said.
ESPN’s Todd McShay said last weekend that Locker has emerged as the top quarterback prospect after Bradford’s injury. ESPN was reporting late Wednesday afternoon that Bradford will have season-ending surgery in the near future.
Bradford, Locker, Colt McCoy of Texas, junior Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame, junior Jevan Snead of Mississippi and Florida’s Tim Tebow are regarded as the top quarterback prospects for the 2010 draft, in no particular order.
