The very first basketball game I shot this season yielded an interesting/funny/uncomfortable photo. There was a loose ball, as there is like to be in a basketball game, in the first quarter between the Sultan Turks and the Arlington Eagles. Arlington’s A.J. Richardson was attempting to dribble the ball up-court and somehow lost control. Enter Sultan’s Nathan Barnhill who wisely attempted to gather in the loose ball but instead of an easy pick-up, he ended up with a diving Richardson at his feet. Soon, both players were on the floor in what must have been an uncomfortable situation. The editors have called it the “leg lock” photo. I will call it “the things you get into when you play sports” photo.
Unfortunately, I was still shooting my short (24-70mm) body instead of my longer (70-200mm) body so even all the way zoomed in at 70mm the frame is very loose. But it’s well lit and even though it was shot on my older Mark II body, still makes for a decent photo when cropped for emphasis. I like it. It’s pretty funny and a photo you don’t see a lot in basketball. I got lucky because the recycle time on my strobes is not very good in the dark Arlington High School gym but I managed to capture a pretty good moment. Let’s all hope for luck in my upcoming games. I’d be happy to make photos like this on a regular basis.
