COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: Husky men rise in AP poll

Kansas will spend at least one more week atop The Associated Press’ college basketball poll — a spot it has held all season.

The Jayhawks (10-0) saw their lead over Texas trimmed a bit. They received 55 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel, six less than it had a week earlier. Those votes all went to Texas (10-0), which beat No. 10 North Carolina 103-90 on Saturday, and was No. 1 on seven ballots.

Kentucky (11-0) had one first-place vote and was third, followed by Purdue (10-0) and Syracuse (11-0).

The University of Washington (7-2) moved up two spots to 22nd from 24th in the country. Washington plays No. 19 Texas A&M today.

Gonzaga, fresh off a 76-41 loss to No. 7 Duke on Saturday, fell ten spots to No. 25 from No. 15.

UConn women again No. 1

The University of Connecticut Huskies were No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 women’s poll for the 31st straight week Monday, surpassing the school record set from 1999-2001.

UConn received all 40 first-place votes from the national media panel and moved within five of the all-time record of 36 consecutive weeks at No. 1 set by Louisiana Tech from 1980-82.

NC St.’s Smith suspended

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State says leading scorer Tracy Smith has been suspended for one game for his comments on the officiating in the Wolfpack’s loss to Wake Forest.

Indiana St. player reinstated

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State senior Harry Marshall has been reinstated to the team after serving a one-game suspension. Marshall did not travel with the squad to Toledo on Saturday after violating team and university policies.

A statement issued by athletic department officials did not specify what rules Marshall had violated.

Marshall will practice with the team this week and is expected to play Wednesday night when IUPUI visits Indiana State. He is averaging 11.3 points and 4.1 rebounds a game, second on the team in both categories.
