Therer’s a Mike Sweeney sighting as M’s go for the homestand sweep

This isn’t your typical day-game-after-a-night-game lineup the Mariners are throwing at the Cubs today.

The Mariners will aim for a 6-0 homestand — and a seven-game winning streak — with Mike Sweeney (remember him?) at DH and Josh Wilson playing first base.

Sweeney has one at-bat since coming off the disabled list on Friday, and with a weekend interleague series at Milwaukee without the DH, he looks to get loads of bench time in the three games after today.

At least one Sweeney is seeing some time. The other one on the Mariners’ roster, relief pitcher Brian Sweeney, still hasn’t pitched since the Mariners called him up from Class AAA Tacoma on June 15. Of course, only two relievers — Brandon League and David Aardsma — have pitched since then, thanks to the great run by the Mariners’ starters. Sweeney tops them all, though. His last big-league appearance was Sept. 28, 2006, for the Padres against the Diamondbacks. Since then, he’d pitched three years in Japan.

As for Josh Wilson at first base, let’s hope his athleticism gets the job done. Put it this way, he has pitched in more big-league games (three) than he’s played at first base (zero). Sweeney has played twice this season at first, but after the last one he developed a sore Achilles so manager Don Wakamatsu wants to stay away from that risk.

One other note: Scott Johnson of The Herald’s sports staff wrote today about the “ex-Mariner factor,” the belief that one thing the Mariners do extremely well is dispatch their players to other teams, where they flourish. Here’s the story.
