Third-ranked Kamiak stays undefeated

SHORELINE – There’s undefeated, and then there’s undefeated.

Unlike the first type, the latter version is rarely misleading.

More importantly, it’s a distinction that will likely maintain its sustainibility longer than a fall sitcom.

The formerely undefeated Shorecrest Highlanders learned this Friday, when the state’s No.3 ranked Kamiak Knights defeated them 48-23 at Shoreline Stadium in Western Conference South Division play.

The Knights remain undefeated (4-0, 4-0) atop of Wesco South, while Shorecrest dropped to 3-1 in league.

“I wouldn’t say we won with ease,” Kamiak coach John Mack said. “It was all preparation. We knew they would come after us hard on the ends, so we just took advantage of what they showed us.”

The Knights, who practiced this week to counter Shorecrest’s blitzing urges, used a third-and-long on their first possession of the night to showcase their preparation in form of a 51-yard touchdown from John Mack to fullback David Eneberg. The pressure of Shorecrest’s rush, which was all but released by the offensive line, allowed Mack to find Eneberg sweeping the left side. The 6-foot-1 running back steamed down the sideline with little resistance, giving the Knights an early 7-0 lead.

“We were very prepared,” Kamiak fullback Eneberg said. “Our defense played great. Our line and receivers blocked great. The hole were always there.

The assault had just begun.

The Knights went on to score 21 unanswered points in just under 2 1/2 minutes to take a commanding 28-0 first-quarter lead.

Eneberg, who scored three touchdowns in the game’s first 24 minutes, tagged on his second score on the first play of the team’s second possession with a 55-yard run around the left end. Eneberg, who had 138 yards last week in the team’s victory over Meadowdale, finished with 76 yards on six carries, and 58 yards receiving.

The Kamiak special teams kept the Knights’ scoring barrage intact on the ensuing kickoff when Justin Washington scored from 4 yards out after picking up a fumble caused by Brandon Welch.

The Welch highlight reel continued rolling two plays into Shorecrest’s next possession when he swiped an ill-advised throw over the middle from Heck.

The Knights’ top runningback Washington, who rushed for just 50 yards on 11 carries, scored four plays later on a 20-yard run which saw a mind-boggling cutback, which opened up a gapping hole on the left side of the field.

The Kamiak offense combined for 441 total yards, while its defense surrendered 276 yards -90 of which came on the ground by the state’s third top rusher Eric Duenas.

Shorecrest, which scored its first points late in the second quarter came off a 16-yard run by Heck, who completed 7-for-20 from air for 85 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Shorecrest scored 10 points in the third quarter which included a 32-yard field goal by Brent Donner.
