Three Mariner grapplers win at Holiday Tournament

EVERETT – Three Mariner wrestlers walked away victorious during Saturday’s six-team Mariner Holiday Tournament.

The format, for the first time in the tournament’s history, changed from a team event to individual.

“This year the focus was on individuals,” Mariner assistant coach Mike Braaten said. “And there were some darn good matches, too.”

Mariner’s Jason Murray pinned Colin Ferris of Shorewood to capture the 112-weight division. At 119, Mariner’s Kyle Castle defeated Kamiak’s Dustin Beyers, 4-3. Castle got past Sultan’s Ryan Conley, 21-5, to reach the finals. Aaron Johnson pinned Bishop Blanchet’s George Tramountanes in the second round to complete Mariner’s trio of champions.

Mark Atterbury, of Sultan defeated Kentlake’s Skyler McFarland, 13-3, to claim the 125 division. Kentlake wrestlers took home five titles, four of which were won by fall.

Wrestlemania at Bellingham High School: Tahoma had seven individual champions to take the team title in the nine-school competition.

Arlington was third and Monroe finished eighth.

Arlington’s Josh Tschudy, Maury Lundberg, Jimmy Jayne and Jason Frank and Monroe’s Willy Ward all finished second in their respective weight classes.

Archbishop Murphy 55, Overlake 48: Jevon Butler made a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining in the game to secure the victory for Archbishop Murphy. Butler, who scored all five of his fourth-quarter points from the free-throw line, finished with a game-high 17 points. Kyle Mulholland followed with 12 points and had five steals. Spencer Smith led Overlake with 14 points.
