Three Snohomish County high school baseball players were selected during the second day of Major League Baseball’s Amateur Draft Wednesday.

Snohomish catcher Jake Hammons, a first-team Wesco all-star, was taken in the 32nd round (the 971st player overall) by the Oakland Athletics. He became the first Snohomish County prep player taken in the 2005 draft.

In the 37th round, Marysville-Pilchuck outfielder Josh Short was taken by the Florida Marlins. In Round 43, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Lake Stevens left-handed pitcher Ryan Verdugo.

Four members of the Edmonds Community College team went on Day 2. Left-handed pitcher A.J. Huttenlocker went to Oakland in round 37, right-handed pitcher Harrison Bishop was taken in the 40th round by the Baltimore Orioles, right-handed pitcher Tony Snow was taken by the San Francisco Giants in the 42nd round and left-handed pitcher Matt Duryea went to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 50th and final round.

A day after two of their teammates were taken, three more University of Washington players were selected. Right-handed pitcher Josh Conover, who had six saves and a 1.67 ERA for the Huskies, was the 698th player taken, going to the San Diego Padres in the 23rd round. Outfielder Taylor Johnson, who hit .307 with eight home runs and a team-best 14 steals, was taken in the 25th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Two-time all-Pacific-10 Conference pitcher Tim Lincecum was finally taken in the 42nd round by the Cleveland Indians. Lincecum, considered a top-100 player prior to the draft, fell because of concerns over his willingness to sign. The righty has two years left of eligibility, giving him great leverage in negotiations.

The Milwaukee Brewers took Washington State University right-handed pitcher Dane Renkert, a Sehome High graduate, in the 29th round.

Everett Community College stars Zach Simons (second round, Colorado), Aaron Cunningham (sixth round, Chicago White Sox) and J.T. Zink (eighth round, Boston) and UW and former Jackson High standout Brent Lillibridge (fourth round, Pittsburgh) all were selected during Tuesday’s first day.
