Three Morrill brothers vying for places in the state wrestling meet

It’s going to be another busy weekend for the Morrill family.

Brothers Micah, Mark and Ammon Morrill all compete for the Snohomish High School wrestling team. Last weekend each of them placed high enough in their respective weight divisions at the Class 4A District 1 Tournament to advance to the 4A Region 1 Tournament, which begins this evening at Auburn High School.

Three siblings on the same team who have a chance to qualify for the state championships — not bad.

The Morrill brothers all placed among the top three for the Panthers at districts: Micah, a senior, placed first at 160 pounds; Mark, a junior, finished first at 171 pounds, and Ammon, a sophomore, knocked off a higher-seeded foe on his way to third place at 135 pounds.

The Morrills helped Snohomish finish third in the district team standings behind champion Lake Stevens and runnerup Marysville-Pilchuck. In the latest WashingtonWrestlingReport.com 4A state team rankings, Lake Stevens is No. 3, Snohomish is No. 13 and M-P is not ranked.

The Morrill brothers are all ranked individually in 4A. Micah is No. 3 in the state at 160, Mark is No. 9 at 171 and Ammon is No. 11 at 135, according to Washington Wrestling Report.

In the two-day regional competition at Auburn High, Wesco North and Wesco South wrestlers will be grouped with grapplers from the South Puget Sound League North Division, a strong league that includes 4A No. 1 Tahoma and No. 5 Auburn.

Here are more details about the 4A regional and this weekend’s other regional wrestling tournaments that feature local athletes. (Competitors who place high enough will qualify for the Mat Classic state championships Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome.)
