Thrilling rally lifts Lake Stevens

LAKE STEVENS – The Lake Stevens Vikings overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Stanwood 2-1 in a Western Conference North Division girls soccer game Saturday.

Hillary Mace and Lindsey Barnes both scored goals in the final 30 minutes to highlight Lake Stevens’ come-from-behind victory. Malea Russum collected assists on both scores.

Lake Stevens improved to 3-1 and Stanwood dropped to 1-3.

Nikki Tepley’s sole first half goal helped Stanwood to an early 1-0 lead.

Cascade 5, Monroe 0: Cascade senior Megan Baines scored a hat-trick in a shutout victory over the Monroe Bearcats (1-3, 1-3). Stephanie Baines and Shannon Basket also recorded goals as Cascade improved to 3-0 in league and 3-0 overall.

Snohomish 2, Oak Harbor 2: The Snohomish Panthers and Oak Harbor Wildcats fought to 2-2 tie in Western Conference action. Snohomish’s Jessica Garrity scored the game-tying goal at the 40-minute mark to force the game into sudden death. Jennifer White scored two first half goals for Oak Harbor as it moved to 2-1-1. Snohomish remains undefeated with a 2-0-1 record.

Sultan 4, Nooksack Valley 0: Heather Howard scored her sixth goal of the season while leading Sultan to its fourth consecutive victory. Freshman Katie Brown, Heather Burnside and Brynn Auckland also scored goals for the Turks.

Jackson’s Caleb Knox, who finished 16th out of 118 competitors, helped the Timberwolves finish sixth. Athletes from Washington, Idaho and Oregon participated in the event.

Tacoma Baptist 49, Coupeville 26: The Coupeville Wolves (0-2) got the bitter end of a sound rushing attack in Saturday’s loss to Tacoma Baptist (2-0). The Wolves were unable to contain T-B’s Josh Bousman, who scored six touchdowns on 220 rushing yards. Quarterback Brad Sherman helped keep the Wolves in contention by throwing for 357 yards, including four touchdown passes.

Oak Harbor 35, Stanwood 8: Oak Harbor used a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense against the run to win the Wesco North game Friday.

Tom McMickle scored two touchdowns, including one on a 45-yard punt return, and quarterback Lenny Serfling hooked up with Chad Embree on two scoring passes to lead the Oak Harbor offense.

Oak Harbor coach Dave Ward praised the effort of his defensive line, crediting Chad Asmus, James Wiley and Fred Cheesboro with limiting Stanwood to just 16 yards rushing.

For the game, Oak Harbor rolled up 337 yards in total offense compared to Stanwood’s 159. Stanwood’s lone touchdown came on an 11-yard pass from Jake Heringstad to Tyler Nicholas in the second quarter.

Nooksack Valley 2, Lopez 1: The Nooksack Valley Pioneers defeated the Lopez Lobos 15-13, 11-15, 15-7 Saturday in the championship match to capture the Lopez Island Volleyball Invitational.

The Pioneers, whose only loss came to the Lobos in the second set of the championship match, defeated La Conner 2-0, Port Townsend 2-0, and Anacortes 2-0 to get to the finals.
