Thunderbirds remain unbeaten

LYNNWOOD – The Shorewood boys tennis team stayed undefeated with a dramatic 4-3 Western Conference South Division victory over Meadowdale on Wednesday afternoon.

The meet came down to the No. 2 match doubles. With every other match concluded and the meet tied 3-3, Keith Schneider and Evan Turner of Shorewood outlasted Corey Bettinghouse and Joey Anderson of Meadowdale 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3.

“Shorewood is a great team and my kids played so well, it was a very hard defeat,” said Meadowdale head coach Mark Schneider.

Meadowdale’s Aaron Lee improved his record to 12-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Justin Michelson in No. 2 singles. Justin Morrison played well for the Mavericks (11-2) with his 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles.

But Shorewood took two of the three doubles matches to decide the outcome.

“Shorewood has great players and a very good coach, I am very proud of my kids,” Schneider said.

Shorewood improved to 13-0 in league and overall.

Lake Stevens 5, Mount Vernon 2: Josh Olsen and Brandon Putchin led Lake Stevens’ doubles sweep by defeating Jake Hockett and Zach Caldwell in the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-3.

Stanwood 3, Arlington 0: At Arlington H.S., Lauren Amundson served up 12 aces to lead Stanwood (15-13, 15-8, 15-5) to its first conference victory. Merilee Nyland had three kills and four blocks in a losing effort for Arlington.

Meadowdale 3, Everett 2: At Meadowdale H.S., Lauren Marty contributed 24 kills and Amy Dermendjieva had 35 assists while helping Meadowdale win three consecutive games after trailing 2-0, (3-15, 14-16, 15-8, 17-15, 15-8).

University Prep 3, Snohomish County Christian 0: At University Prep, University Prep won the Emerald City League match 15-5, 15-11, 17-15 on Tuesday.
