Kristina Bosket knows how it feels to get agonizingly close to reaching a goal. Last spring she nearly broke Arlington’s girls school record in the 1,600-meter run. She clocked in at 5:19 at the district meet, missing the record by two seconds. Bosket will have another chance this spring, but now she’s set on qualifying for the state cross country meet for the first time. In this case, close won’t cut it, she said: “I don’t want to feel like that again.”
Coach’s corner Bosket, a co-captain who joined the cross country team as a sophomore, “is a wonderful person in general. She has made a commitment to excellence in all areas of her life,” Arlington coach Mike Shierk said. “She has just the most wonderful disposition and motivates (with) her glowing personality.”
On a mission Bosket picked up her first varsity-meet victory Sept. 28 during a Western Conference event against Everett, Kamiak and Shorecrest at River Meadows Park in Arlington. The senior completed the 3.1-mile route in 20:16 and won by 28 seconds. Bosket, who also placed third in the seniors race at the North County Invitational on Thursday, is surging toward a possible state meet berth. She’d be the first Arlington girl to qualify since 2002 (Breann Pickett). Bosket placed 28th (20:41) at Class 4A districts last year and must finish in the top-10 in 3A this year to advance.
Keep calm Competition can be stressful. Bosket used to get extremely nervous before races, even several days in advance, but she finally overcame the jitters. “I just started to not think about it so hard,” she said. “I realized it wasn’t that big of a deal. … It was getting a little bit out of control.”
Dream jobs Bosket wants to teach business – maybe accounting – and coach cross country at Arlington. Her grandpa once taught there and her dad is an Arlington graduate who went to state in track.
Favorite home-cooked meal Her dad’s chicken lasagna, which provides a tasty carbohydrate boost. Said Bosket, “I beg him to make it all the time.”
Collections For about five years, Bosket has saved tiny sea shells that she finds on the beach near her family’s beach cabin near Stanwood at Kayak Point.
Tune in Bosket’s favorite TV shows are MTV’s “Laguna Beach” and all of the “CSI” crime-drama shows.
