Timeout with … Trevor Waite, Jackson boys basketball

How’s life?

Good. I’m enjoying the last year of high school. Senior year’s been fun so far.

What’s been the highlight of your senior year so far?

I really enjoy this (basketball) team this year and all the guys get along pretty well. We’re all pretty close, and San Diego was a good time.

What’d you do in San Diego? Was there a tournament?

Yeah we had three games in San Diego and we got second place in the top bracket and also got a day at Disneyland.

How’s school going? What’s it like going to high school at Jackson?

It’s pretty good. C.E. (Culminating Exhibition [Senior Seminar]) is a challenge sometimes, but all the other classes are pretty fun.

Are you excited to graduate?

Yeah. I’m excited to move on to the next step in life. I’m going to go on a two-year church mission I think. I’ll find out where in June. It could be anywhere in the world.

That sounds cool.

Yeah. And then I’ll probably go to BYU (Brigham Young Universtiy) after that for four years.

Do you want to keep playing basketball?

Uh no…probably not. I think I’m going to go into pre-med. I want to be an orthodontist I think.

When did you start playing basketball?

I’ve played since I was in first grade. I went through Mill Creek Parks and Rec, and then started playing with the Wolfpack in sixth grade. Then feeder team and then I made the JV team my freshman year.

Why have you played for so long?

I think it teaches you a lot of good values and it helps you interact better with people and contribute as a team, and contribute what you have to offer to reach a higher goal.

Do you play any other sports?

I did track but I didn’t really enjoy it that much.

What about watching sports?

Yeah I enjoy watching every other sport. Like football I went to every game.

Did you ever play football?

In seventh grade. But I got hurt and I didn’t want to risk the basketball season.

Who is your favorite professional athlete?

Probably Jimmer (Fredette, Sacramento Kings guard) right now. I enjoyed watching him at BYU and now I hope he has a good pro season.

What are your thoughts on Tim Tebow?

I think he’s talked up more than he actually is.

What’s the best? A Wii, XBOX 360 or Play Station 3?

360. Cause my dad works at Microsoft.

Okay, so you have to plug that.

Yeah.

Do you – or have you ever – read a newspaper?

Yeah. I still do. And online a lot too.

Do high schoolers still email people? Or is that pretty much done?

I haven’t emailed a friend. Ever.

Are you on Twitter?

No. Just Facebook. I’m thinking about it.

What’s your major concern? What’s keeping you from getting a Twitter account?

I don’t know if I want to jump on the bandwagon. And I don’t know if it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

What kind of music do you like?

I like country and rap and stuff.

That’s pretty diverse.

Yeah. I listen to alternative too. Whatever sounds good.

What do you envision for yourself in 2012?

Probably to graduate and then go on that two-year church mission and have a great time doing that, serving other people.
