PORTLAND, Ore. – The Everett Silvertips weren’t about to lose two straight to the last-place team in the U.S. Division, no matter how much fate may have been against them.
Everett scored the game’s final three goals, and the Silvertips overcame two disallowed goals to defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 5-2 Saturday night.
Moises Gutierrez had two goals and an assist to lead Everett, which avenged its 3-1 home loss to the Winter Hawks the previous night.
Gutierrez’s second goal broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second period, then Zach Hamill and Peter Mueller scored third-period goals to clinch it.
Dane Crowley scored his first goal as a Silvertip and David Reekie made 20 saves in goal for Everett (34-7-0-1).
Matt Schmermund and Nick Hotson scored and Kurtis Mucha made 31 saves in goal for Portland (14-27-1-1), which gave Everett more problems than the final score indicated.
Everett dominated during the first period to take a 2-0 lead. However, what could have been the turning point occurred early in the second.
Schmermund had scored off an Everett turnover to make it 2-1 when Jesse Smyke scored on a breakaway to apparently restore the two-goal lead. However, the goal was mysteriously waived off and Everett defenseman Jason Fransoo was given a double-minor for high sticking, despite the fact no penalty was called during the play.
Reekie took a slashing penalty moments later to give Portland a full two-minute five-on-three power play, and the Winter Hawks capitalized on Hotson’s rebound goal to tie it up at 9:27.
But Gutierrez backhanded a shot past Mucha off a rebound of a Mueller shot to give Everett the lead again at 11:56.
It could have gone either way from there, and Everett had another goal waived off early in the third period when the referee blew the play dead while the puck was rolling across the goal line.
But the Tips put it away with two goals in two minutes. Great passing by Kyle Beach and Dan Gendur opened things up for Hamill to score at 10:18, and Mueller wristed a shot past Mucha after a nice pass from Ondrej Fiala at 11:30.
Everett came out a house on fire in the first period, and the Winter Hawks had Mucha to thank for trailing just 2-0 as the Tips peppered the Portland goal with 19 shots. The Tips opened the scoring on the power play at 6:41, Gutierrez tipping in a Mueller shot. Then at 13:52 it was 2-0, Crowley following the play and punching a loose puck into the top of the net.
