Tips beat Portland, head to break happy

The Everett Silvertips are heading into the Christmas break on a high.

Everett scored early and often, and the Tips finished off the first half of the season in style with a 6-1 victory over the Portland Winter Hawks in a penalty-filled contest Sunday evening.

Playing once again without leading scorers Kyle Beach and Zach Hamill — Beach is out with a concussion, Hamill was finishing out a two-game suspension — the Tips spread the wealth with six different goal scorers. All six goals came in the game’s opening 38 minutes as the Tips put this one away early.

Shane Harper had a goal and two assists to lead the Tips (18-16-0-2), who finished off the first half with back-to-back victories over the Winter Hawks.

Dan Gendur, Dane Crowley, Clayton Bauer, Jonathan Harty and Matt Ius also scored and Leland Irving made 27 saves in goal for the Tips, who are off until Dec. 27 when they open up the second half at Tri-City.

Jacob Dietrich scored a consolation goal for Portland (6-28-0-1). Winter Hawks starting goaltender Jordan White lasted just a period, giving up four goals on 19 shots. Kurtis Mucha made 21 saves in relief.

There was no love lost between the two teams, which led to plenty of power-play time. Everett had two five-minute power plays because of major penalties and also had a two-minute five-on-three. Portland had a pair of two-minute five-on-threes, and also had its own five-minute power play because of a major.

But most of the scoring came before the power plays kicked in. Everett needed just 1 minute, 16 seconds to get on the board when Gendur got a shot through White from a tight angle in the left corner.

That opened the floodgates. Crowley made it 2-0 at 2:28 on another shot White would like back, scoring from along the boards on the right. Harper made it 3-0 on the power play at 9:26, getting to a loose puck in the slot following a rebound. Then Bauer scored at 16:02 on a shot from the right circle, another shot that managed to sneak through White.

Everett then turned it into a blowout with two more goals early in the second period. Harty scored on a rebound on the power play at 4:56, then Ius surprised Mucha with a shot at 7:07, and the Tips led 6-0.

Portland finally broke Irving’s shutout with 31 seconds remaining in the second when Dietrich scored on a rebound to make it 6-1.
