Tips can’t escape Americans’ offensive onslaught, fall 5-2

KENNEWICK — For the second time in a week Everett Silvertips goaltender Kent Simpson turned in a highlight-reel performance against the Tri-City Americans.

And for the second time it all went for naught.

Tri-City’s offense finally solved Simpson in the third period, and the Tips fell 5-2 Friday night.

Simpson made one big save after another to keep the Americans at bay for two periods. But there was only so much the 16-year-old netminder could do when faced with a barrage as the Americans rained down 41 shots on the Everett goal.

It was a similar result to when the teams played last Saturday in Everett, when Simpson stopped 49 of 52 shots in a 4-1 loss.

Mitch Fadden, Tyler Schmidt, Jordan Messier and Brendan Shinnimin all scored third-period goals as Tri-City (41-16-0-3) became the first team to beat Everett in regulation when the Tips led after two periods. Everett was previously 19-0-3-2 when leading after two.

Brooks Macek also scored for the Americans and Chet Pickard made 21 saves in goal.

Shane Harper and Jesse Burt scored for Everett (25-27-7-2), which dropped from a tie for fifth all the way to seventh in the Western Conference, as both Kamloops and Seattle won Friday.

Everett lost winger Dale Hunt early in the game. Hunt left the ice wobbly after a big hit by Brett Plouffe.
