Everett made a pair of moves this evening.
The more interesting one is the Tips claimed overage forward Travis Dunstall off waivers from the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Dunstall is a talented player who’s never fully realized his potential in the WHL and has now cycled through two teams. The 16th-overall pick in the 2004 bantam draft by Kamloops, last season he had 15 goals, 34 assists and 103 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Tigers. I do not believy the Dunstall was in camp with the Tigers.
This is a boom-or-bust move by the Tips. Dunstall adds to Everett’s growing collection of first-round picks on the roster (Dale Hunt, Kellan Tochkin, Alex Theriau, Ryan Murray, Nicholas Walters, Kent Simpson), and he would probably move ahead of Alex Poulter and Colin Scherger in the competition for Everett’s third overager spot. But he also hasn’t always seen eye-to-eye with his previous coaches, and as of now I don’t even know if he’s going to report. However, it didn’t cost the Tips anything, so it’s worth a shot.
The other piece of news is the Tips signed 16-year-old defenseman Evan Morden to a WHL education contract. That makes Morden eligible to play in games this weekend.
—- UPDATE, 6:35 p.m.
Tips general manager Doug Soetaert said Dunstall, who was not invited to attend camp with the Tigers and had been working with the Grand Prairie Storm of the AJHL, will be arriving tomorrow, so he could be in the lineup sometime this weekend. He provides “competition,” as Soetaert put it.
