PORTLAND, Ore. – Now that’s the way to finish off a game.

The Everett Silvertips scored three goals in the third period to defeat the Portland Winter Hawks 5-3 Friday night in a Western Hockey League game.

Everett (4-2-2-1) has had difficulty closing out games lately, winning just once in its past six contests. But Mark Kress, Zach Hamill and Tyler Dietrich tallied in the third period as Everett pulled away from a 2-2 tie.

Marc Desloges and Barry Horman also scored goals for the Silvertips, Ivan Baranka registered two assists and Michael Wall made 17 saves in goal.

Dan Da Silva, Brian Woolger and Alex Aldred scored for Portland (4-5), which lost its third straight game.

Kress broke a 2-2 tie at 7 minutes, 54 seconds of the third period. Jonathon Harty shot from the point and Kress redirected the puck under Portland goaltender Dustin Butler, giving Everett the lead with his third goal of the season.

Hamill made it 4-2 at 14:55, stealing a pass in the slot and wristing a shot past Butler for his first goal of the season. Portland kept it interesting as Aldred scored his second goal of the season at 16:17 to once again make it a one-goal game. However, Dietrich scored into an empty net at 18:50 – his fourth goal of the season – to clinch the victory.

The Silvertips took the lead nine minutes into the game, scoring on their first chance on their first power play of the night. Curtis Billsten spied Desloges going backdoor, made the cross-ice pass, and Desloges stuffed it in, making it 1-0 with his first goal of the season.

Portland tied the score at the 16:11 mark of the first period. Michael Funk’s shot was parried by Wall, but Everett defender Shaun Heshka accidentally knocked the puck into his own net. Da Silva was credited with the goal, his fifth goal of the season, making it 1-1.

The Winter Hawks then took a 2-1 lead 1:21 into the second period. On the break, Garrett Festerling found Woolger out front, and Woolger scored to make it 2-1 with his fourth goal of the season.

But the Silvertips took advantage of Portland penalties to tie the game. The Winter Hawks took two penalties simultaneously, giving Everett two minutes of five-on-three. The Silvertips capitalized when Horman tipped in the puck to make it 2-2 at 10:40. It was Horman’s first goal of the season.

Everett again played without captain Mitch Love, who missed his third straight game because of bruised pectoral muscles.
