The Tips made a roster move today, cutting goaltender Mario Petit. The 17-year-old was one of three young netminders engaged in the battle to be Austin Lotz’s backup this season. Both Nik Amundrud and Carter Hart played in the past weekend’s preseason games, while Petit was scratched for both, so the writing was on the wall. Petit, who showed well during training camp and the preseason, will play this season for the Steinbach Pistons of the MJHL.
The move leaves Everett with 26 players on the roster — 15 forwards, eight defensmen and three goaltenders. The Tips still have to make one more move with its goaltenders, as well as one move with its overagers. No moves will be made on those fronts until Lotz and defenseman Ben Betker return from their NHL training camps, and the overager deadline isn’t until Oct. 15. It’s very possible all 26 players still with the team will be there for the season opener against Seattle on Saturday in Kent.
One other note from today’s practice is that a familiar face was on hand. Former Everett standout Kellan Tochkin is spending the week practicing with the Tips before joining the Central Hockey League’s Missouri Mavericks. It was a little odd seeing the playmaking forward taking reps as a defenseman, but it was good to see him again.
