Everett traded the rights to defenseman Drew McDermott today, sending the former Silvertip to Lethbridge in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2011 bantam draft. Lethbridge is in need of defensive help after suffering several injuries at the back end.
McDermott began the season with Everett before being reassigned in November. The 18-year-old appeared in 64 games with the Tips over the past two seasons, registering one goal and five assists. He had been playing for the Yorkton Terriers of the SJHL, where he had two assists in 11 games.
I also got to see Everett associate head coach Jay Varady’s gold medal from the World Junior Hockey Championships this afternoon. That’s one impressive piece of hardware …
—- UPDATE 6:25 p.m.
Just received word that prospect Tyler Giebel has been called up for the weekend. I’m guessing Giebel, a 16-year-old forward who was Everett’s second-round pick in the 2008 bantam draft, was summoned to cover for injuries to Dan Iwanski and Campbell Elynuik. Iwanski is out with a knee injury, Elynuik suffered an unspecified injury while delivering a hit during Tuesday’s game at Kamloops.
Giebel has 12 goals and 24 assists in 27 games for the Regina Pat Canadians of the SMAAAHL.
