Tips ride big third to win

RED DEER, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips used a big third period to heap more misery on the Red Deer Rebels.

Everett scored all three of its goals in the third period, and the Silvertips defeated the Red Deer 3-1 Friday night, consigning the Rebels to their ninth straight loss.

Taylor Ellington, Kyle Beach and Lukas Vartovnik scored goals as Everett (9-7-0-0) overcame a frustrating first two periods to record a come-from-behind win.

Shayne Barrie, making just his second start of the season, had an uneventful night in goal for Everett, being forced to make just 12 saves.

Landon Ferraro scored and James Reimer stopped 22 shots in goal for Red Deer (4-13-3-0).

Through two periods nothing quite worked for the Tips. Everett never clicked offensively, and a string of penalties in the second period led to a five-on-three goal for Ferraro as Red Deer took a 1-0 lead into the third.

However, the Tips began the third period on the power play and cashed in after 1 minute, 28 seconds. Dan Gendur’s shot from the point was blocked in front, but Ellington swept in from the right point and put in the rebound to tie it up.

The Tips then took the lead at 12:54 through a tremendous passing move. Dane Crowley’s stretch pass sent Zach Hamill into the zone. Hamill, pressured by two defenders, dropped a pass to Gendur, who immediately crossed to Beach for a one-timer at the far post, giving the Tips the lead.

Vartovnik finished off the Rebels, scoring into an empty net with 6.3 seconds remaining.

Little of consequence occurred in the first period. Everett controlled the run of play, outshooting the Rebels 7-2. But Red Deer had the best scoring chance when the Rebels created a turnover in the Everett zone while short-handed. However, Scott Doucet fanned on his shot attempt, and the period ended scoreless.

Everett then got into all kinds of penalty trouble in the second period, taking three minors in the space of two minutes and presenting Red Deer with a pair of five-on-three advantages. The Rebels scored on the second, Ferraro one-timing in a back-door pass from Joel Kot to give Red Deer a 1-0 lead at 8:32.
