EVERETT — Everett Silvertips goaltender Kent Simpson has been invited to try out for Canada’s U-18 team that will compete at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, Hockey Canada announced Thursday.
The 17-year-old Simpson, who was a rookie backup for Everett this past season, was one of four goaltenders invited to the tryouts, which take place Aug. 1-4 in Calgary, Alberta. Two goaltenders will make the final roster.
The Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, which serves as the U-18 world cup, takes place Aug. 11-15 in Slovakia.
Simpson is seeking to become the seventh Silvertip to participate in the tournament. The others include Zach Hamill, Brady Calla and Leland Irving in 2005, Shane Harper and Vitaly Karamnov in 2006, and Kyle Beach in 2007. Hamill, Calla, Irving and Beach all played for Canada, Harper played for the United States, and Karamnov played for Russia.
Last season Simpson, Everett’s first-round pick in the 2007 bantam draft, was 8-11-3-1 with a 3.85 goals against average and .892 save percentage.
